Process

When there was a political change in 1959, many Tibetans fled to Nepal andPotala Palace, Tibet settled in Katmandu and other parts of Nepal.  The Swiss wanted to help the Tibetans settled in Katmandu and they were asked about their skills.  The Tibetan had an obvious answer, they had expertise of making rugs handed down from generations.  Tibetans always have had the history of being herdsmen, raising sheep and mountain goats and using the fine wool to make rugs and carpets.  The rugs were used in saddles, as flooring, mats and bedding.  The Lamas used them in the monasteries and pagodas.

With the help of the Swiss, the Tibetans started the process of making rugs in Katmandu and selling them to Europe.  The rugs were typically made in Traditional designs and shipped to Europe.  German buyers from Europe started purchasing Tibetan rugs in large quantities which established the carpet industry in Nepal.  The Americans followed suit and started purchasing from Nepal according to their own taste.  Today hand made Tibetan rugs have grown popular and are being sold worldwide with ever growing market.
